What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of making a brand visible in AI-generated answers. Where SEO optimizes for ranked links in search results, GEO optimizes for being cited by answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, through citable content, structured data, and third-party presence.
Why does GEO exist?
Because the place people ask questions moved. Buyers increasingly open ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews and ask for a shortlist instead of scanning ten blue links. When the answer replaces the ranking, a brand that is not cited inside the answer is invisible at the exact moment a buying decision forms.
The pressure shows up in traffic too: content-led sites across the industry report shrinking organic clicks on informational queries as AI answers absorb them, which is measurable in any Search Console account. The clicks are not coming back; the citation is the new click.
What does GEO actually optimize?
GEO optimizes three layers: whether AI crawlers can access and parse your pages (technical access), whether your passages are written in a form an answer engine can lift verbatim (citability), and whether third-party sources that engines trust, like directories and reviews, corroborate that you exist (eminence).
Concretely, the work looks like this:
- Technical access: allowing GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and friends in robots.txt, serving content in raw HTML (AI bots do not run JavaScript), publishing a sitemap and clean canonicals.
- Citable content: self-contained 40-60 word passages under question-form headings, sourced statistics, definitions, comparison tables. The format you are reading right now.
- Structured data: Organization, Product, and FAQ schema so engines resolve who you are and quote facts (like pricing) correctly.
- Third-party presence: category directories, review platforms, and articles that answer engines cross-reference before trusting a claim.
How is GEO measured?
GEO is measured by running real buyer queries against answer engines and recording whether the brand is cited in each answer. A credible measurement is dated and repeatable, separates what was measured from what was estimated, and never presents an unmeasured cell as a result.
Live answers change run to run, so a single screenshot is not evidence. The CITE score methodology we use scores four dimensions (Citation, Identity, Trust, Eminence) and marks every unmeasured cell as unmeasured. You can run the measurement on your own domain free, no account required.
Is GEO different from AEO or LLMO?
The names compete; the work is the same. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization) describe the same discipline: earning citations inside machine-generated answers. GEO has become the most common umbrella term, and it is the one used by the research literature that named the field in 2023.
