Does llms.txt matter?
Honestly: less than the hype says. Google's own AI optimization guide states that Google Search does not use llms.txt or any other extra “AI text” file — it neither helps nor hurts your visibility in Google, including AI Overviews. Some other AI crawlers (Anthropic's ClaudeBot, Perplexity) have been observed fetching the file, and no engine guarantees it reads it. So: five minutes, cannot hurt, may help a subset of agents. That is exactly how we score it in the free BeCited report: informational — a missing llms.txt never lowers your score.
